Contrast, a prerequisite for experience of reality

Your sensory system is not designed to detect absolutes.

It is designed to detect change, difference, deviation…. aka. contrast.

  • For the brain to make sense of the data collected from your eyes on “brightness”, there needs to be a register on the change in “brightness”.
  • For the brain to make sense of the data collected from your skin, on pressure, there needs to be a register on the difference in “pressure”.
  • For the brain to make sense of the data collected from your ears, it needs to register change in the vibrations of air.

Every single sensory channel is a contrast detector.

The brain is built to register delta, the difference between now and before.

The 11 Million Bits Problem

In QLC #36, I wrote about the brain’s extraordinary filtering system, how 11 million bits of sensory information arrives every second, but only approximately 40 bits ever reach conscious awareness. The rest is handled below the surface, triaged by the prediction library the brain has already been built from prior experience.

The triage process is fundamentally a contrast operation.

❗When the brain scans incoming data, it is asking constantly, automatically, beneath awareness “does this differ from what I predicted?” If the answer is no, the data is suppressed. If it matches the model; it carries no new information; it is filtered out. Only the data that deviates from prediction that presents contrast against the background of expectation makes it through to conscious processing.

This is why novelty wakes us up. This is why surprise is neurologically distinct from ordinary experience. This is why emotional charge attaches to the unexpected far more readily than the familiar.

Your brain is a contrast-detection engine first. Everything else is downstream of that.

Measurement Requires a Reference Point

And so, Perception (interpreting and making sense of incoming environmental data), requires Contrast.

In other words, it needs something “relative” to measure against it.

You cannot know how tall something is without something shorter beside it. You cannot know how slow a process is without having measured a faster one. You cannot determine whether something is good or bad, better or worse, enough or not enough without a reference point against which you are measuring it.

🤌🏼 Every judgment ever made has a measuring stick behind it. And that measuring stick is always composed of contrast, the implicit opposite that gives the judgment (interpretation) its meaning.


Contrast Is Also How We Know What We Want

The fastest way to arrive at clarity, is to know what we don’t want, first. Then, we can understand instead what we DO want.

Through discontentment, we understand our longing.

Dissatisfaction is a contrast signal.

Misalignment is a contrast signal.

The feeling of being in the wrong life is a contrast signal.

The restlessness, the sense that something is missing, the quiet knowing that this isn’t it; these are not failures of direction. They are contrast data. The mind is registering deviation from something it knows, somewhere, to be more aligned.

This is why contrast exists in life, as the perceptual mechanism by which we get clearer on what we actually came here for.

📌 The dissatisfaction isn’t the problem. It’s the signal. Contrast is the mind’s way of pointing toward alignment.

Judgment as a Contrast Operation

Judgement is a form of interpretation. And every judgement has two components: a subject, and a reference point.

  • “That was wrong”; wrong compared to what?
  • “She is unkind”; unkind relative to which standard of kindness?
  • “This situation is unfair”; unfair against which expectation of fairness?

This is why everything in our reality is Subjective or Relative.

Judgment, at its most basic structure, is a comparison. It is a contrast operation. And the reference point it measures against is the implicit pole, the opposite that makes the judgment coherent.

I wrote an article on reclaiming information, which is connected to this topic here, based in “selective contrast”. When we label an experience we are measuring the deviation in one direction and ignoring the equal and opposite presence on the other side. The conscious brain is running a contrast operation, but with incomplete data. This article, dives into this on reclaiming the Whole of experience.


The Law of Duality: Equal Complementary Opposites

I speak about the Law of Duality here, specifically, as described by the work of Monica Ion, in which it is described that everything within reality exists as a whole with dual equal opposite complementary halves.

The dual nature of reality exists because consciousness requires contrast to perceive and make meaning of experience.

Duality is the very structure that allows consciousness to know itself and have experiences. And, so, the very act of perceiving anything at all, requires the Law of Duality to operate. It’s the structural condition that makes everything we call the “human experience” possible.

You experience the Law of Duality at all times.


Seeing the Whole Field

When contrast is processed through wholeness, when the perceiving mind can hold both poles simultaneously, can locate the support in the apparent challenge, can find the order in the apparent chaos, something shifts. Now the full data is available. And full data, as DeMartini & Monica Ion would both say in their own way, is what reclaims the hidden order.

You cannot stop experiencing contrast. It is the mechanism of perception. You are built for it. The question is: “what am I doing with the contrast data?”

“Am I using it to locate the opposite to find the wholeness, to reclaim the missing information. OR am I using it to reinforce a one-sided story that keeps me oscillating between seeking and avoiding?
